APPEARANCE
In appearance, Shae favors her mother's side; the average tabletop fantasy citizen would be quick to identify her as drow. However, there are some clear signs of her mixed heritage in her features. Her ears are small and lightly pointed, rather than the tall and tapered ears of full-blooded elves, and her skin is an ashen grey that falls short of the deep black prized among drow. Her eyes, too, are a pale shade of greyish-purple, such that the overall effect is an almost monochrome palette across her whole person.Shae is tall and willowy in build, with the angular face of a drow noblewoman, but there's something quite human about her pointy little nose and expressive features. Her white hair is usually braided, though it excels at escaping said braids. She is at all times finely-dressed, typically in black, silver, and shades of purple.
Despite her statuesque appearance (and keen sense of fashion), she gives off a surprisingly mischievous energy. Her demeanor is reminiscent of a cat: a mixed bag of playful curiosity, mild disdain, and the urge to cause trouble. She has a pleasant, low-pitched voice, and a tendency to slightly invade others' personal space.
PERSONALITY
Charismatic, quick-witted, and often sharp-tongued, Shae T'sarren is the sort of person who commands attention. She thinks it would greatly please her mother's house if she were to recede into obscurity, and she doesn't intend to give them the satisfaction. She is proudly iconoclastic, outgoing, and open to new ideas (almost recklessly so). Shae was always a clever child, and has grown into an intelligent, well-read adult, but she tends to pursue her goals with an almost monomaniacal devotion which alarms many onlookers.
Loyalty is not a virtue Shae exhibits to any great extent, though she finds it rather endearing in other people, in the way that one might find a dog chasing its own tail to be endearing. Coming from her, betrayal could signify anything from deep-rooted hatred to flirting. She is of the opinion that the best way to get out of a pact with a demon is to enter a pact with a second demon, and make them fight each other. Then again, maybe she just gets a kick out of people fighting over her.
Ironically, she makes no particular effort to hide her self-serving nature, nor does she expect loyalty from anyone else. (In fact, a well-executed betrayal might gain her respect.) Shae is mercenary and manipulative, but she's never claimed to be otherwise, and her unflinching honesty about the matter can be weirdly refreshing. It doesn't hurt that she has a friendly, teasing manner, even towards most of her enemies. She rarely appears to lose her temper or express sadness; very little is able to crack the affable facade she's cultivated.
Shae's most unexpected quality, and one she rarely shows to others, is her empathy for the underdog: people marginalized by accidents of their birth, underestimated by their peers, or mistreated by authority figures. Granted, her suggestion to such people is that they learn eldritch magic and duel their oppressors to the death. Still, her heart is... if not in the right place, then at least in the right general area. Which is probably the best you can hope for, from a woman who thinks assassination attempts are a love language.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
DARKVISION
Through her occult studies, Shae has gained the ability to see normally in darkness, both magical and non-magical, to a distance of 120 feet.
MAGICAL RESISTANCE
Due to her fey heritage, Shae is comparatively difficult to magically charm, and cannot be put to sleep by spells.
SKILLS
Shae is observant, skilled at reading people, trained in courtly etiquette, and a scholar of history and the arcane. She is fluent in five languages and can lie to you in all of them. So far she remains unmurdered, which, under the circumstances, is a talent in itself.
WEAPON & ARMOR PROFICIENCIES
As befits a noblewoman of the Underdark, Shae is proficient in the use of light armor and weapons such as daggers, shortbows, and quarterstaffs.
AWAKENED MIND
Shae can speak telepathically to any creature within 30 feet of her, so long as that creature is capable of understanding language.
SPELLCASTING
Shae is an arcane spellcaster with a certain eldritch flavor (the influence of her patron, That Which Lurks). A complete list of her spells can be found in the comment below this journal entry.
HISTORY
Shae was born to a noblewoman from House T'sarren, the result of her somewhat rebellious mother's hate-fling with a human adventurer. Her mother died not long after her birth, and therefore Shae was taken in by her aunt Lleril: the matriarch of House T'sarren, who had loved her late sister, but held far less affection for her sister's half-human spawn. Lleril and her children disregarded Shae at best; more often, they treated her with obvious contempt. To the family's dismay, however, it became clear that Shae had an aptitude for the arcane.
Barred from becoming a cleric of Lolth due to her "impure" ancestry, Shae devoted herself to the pursuit of magic nonetheless. Delving into an eclectic variety of occult traditions, she did some studying on her own. The culmination of her knowledge, thus far, is figuring out a way to draw power from the eldritch god Ghaunadar, a primordial entity of the Underdark. Still, Shae is forever in search of new mystical secrets, and so she's left home to explore the forgotten corners of the world — or even other worlds entirely. The rest of House T'sarren is going to shit bricks when she comes back.
